Greenwich wildlife control Tip of the Month:

Biology of a Black Rat

Appearance
The black rat weighs in at about 200g and grows to almost 7 inches long from the front of the nose to the tip of its tail, making it slightly smaller than the other most common species of rat in the world, the Norway rat. Despite its name, all members of the black rat species are not strictly of black color (though it is the most common among the species). In fact, they have been recorded to have fur coats with colors ranging from lighter shades of black to many hues of brown to even a rare few being of a tinted green variety. Its fur is rough and uneven, with the tail barely covered in any fur.

Biology
Upon reaching sexual maturity at the age of about four months, black rats are ready to mate in the months between March and November. After mating, the couple rarely sticks together, and the female is left to breed the young on her own. Black rats can produce an astounding number of offspring in a single cycle, with one mother even recorded to give birth to 56 young at the same time. After they are born, the mother only cares for the babies for the first few days of their lives, feeding them milk, before they venture out on their own. The mother can also choose to mate during this period, which further increases the black rat's rate of reproduction.

Lifecycle
After leaving the care of their mother, the black rats venture out on their own to search for food and shelter. While the young are fully equipped to hunt for their food and grow to full adult size in about 3 to 5 months, their lifespans are very short, with most not living to see the next year. This short lifespan can be attributed to the fact that the black rat easily falls prey to some predators like cats and birds of prey, but it is also due to human efforts to control their population since they carry deadly diseases.

Habitat
Though the black rat originated from India and southeastern parts of Asia, it is now commonly found around the world, mostly in countries with warm climates. While it did migrate on its own from India to Egypt and then to Europe, it was the Europeans that helped spread it over the world when they unknowingly imported rats living on ships to places they would visit, earning it the nickname "ship rat." They can adapt to almost any environment to find a suitable place to live, be it high buildings, trees or even burrowing in the ground.

Diet
Black rats are true omnivores; they will eat anything and everything. They are known to prefer fruits and nuts over meat, but they are generally not very picky when it comes to food.

Behavior
Black rats tend to live in large groups consisting of multiple females and males, with dominant males being more sexually active, and are primarily nocturnal. They also exhibit destructive behaviors: ripping off bark trees, destroying crops, contaminating food supplies. This is the main reason why they are considered great pests.
